OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates held the 2014 National Convention in Los Angeles, CA from August 7-10. The Forest Service has participated in this annual event since 2001 when the event was held in Seattle, WA. This year’s event was attended by almost 700 individuals. Forest Service recruiters were available to meet with interested participants about jobs. The Forest Service has participated in the job fair longer than any federal agency. The meeting has become a forum for the Forest Service to meet Civil Rights strategic outreach goals. Forest Service personnel met with OCA members to discuss topics of interest to the Asian Pacific Islander community.
A pre-OCA strategic meeting was held with primary partners to discuss cultural heritage project opportunities for Region 5 of the Forest Service. Meeting attendees included Forest Service personnel, executive directors for the Chinese Historical Society of America (San Francisco), Chinese American Museum (Los Angeles) and a University of Nevada at Las Vegas history professor emeritus. As a result of this meeting, several partners (including the Forest Service) are planning a tour of Chinese historical sites in northern California.
